We are proud to announce the recipient of the 2022 Newburgh Illuminated Mayor Judy Kennedy Citizens Award - Leonard Lee

A Newburgh boxing coach gives young people a safe space to practice their skills, who has made an incredibly positive impact on the lives of 100’s of kids in the city.

Lee has been owner of Newburgh Hook Elite Boxing Club located at the Delano Hitch Park for the past 12 years. As head coach, he takes pride in training young boxers who, in some cases, become state and national champions.“Gloves up, guns down sparring” Lee has fostered an invaluable environment for the youth of the city (80% of them at the club are under 18). Lee says the kids who come to work out are from all races and backgrounds, and no matter the direction they take in life, he's proud to know they'll never leave the lessons behind in the ring. Hook Elite Boxing will be showcasing their fighters on Broadway this Saturday June 4th, during the festival  - and Leonard Lee will be honored on the main stage mid-afternoon.

We can think of anyone better to illuminate this year - and are grateful people like Leonard Lee are a part of this great city.
